November 24, 2021

There was a time when we had stories to tell. A time when our phones beeped and vibrated non-stop with tales from weekends past. When people returned from their travels with rich and exciting stories, told around dinner tables. As we all know, those times were rudely interrupted…

And so, gradually, over the last 17 months, our stories were replaced by awkward silences, empty inboxes and “nothing muches”. But as more and more South Africans get vaccinated, hope hangs on the horizon. Pretty soon, we’ll be able to make new stories.

And like 50 years before, a bucket of KFC will be there to bear witness where these stories are shared.

Over the last 50 years, many great stories were shared around a bucket of KFC. To celebrate the return of making and telling of stories, KFC is launching a meal with not one, but three buckets - The Triple Birthday Barrel. 6 pieces of crispy chicken, 16 golden nuggets, chips and 4 ice-cold Coca-Cola’s. Loaded with enough KFC goodness to last many stories long, it’s the perfect meal to celebrate 50 years of KFC.

Going big for our 50th Birthday Bash – because how else would we do it - we’re opening the doors to our first-ever pop-up store, Kentucky Town, so we can celebrate KFC-style with our fans - and of course our Superfans.

Just in time to kick off the Ke Dezemba vibes, Kentucky Town will be hosting fans at The Zone @ Rosebank for a limited time only from 25th of November until the 5th of December – just 11 days, in honour of our Original 11 Herbs and Spices Secret Recipe.

Join the celebration and tuck into our Bespoke Birthday Menu, Never-Before-Never-Again experiences, Limited-Edition Gear and so much more!

What’s a party without a fresh new look? Visit Kentucky Town to grab an item from our limited-edition Birthday Gear – collectors alert! The range includes a limited-edition Birthday Collection of KFC classics as well as a variety of collab collections with some of our fav design partners - David Slaying Goliath, Thesis Lifestyle and Yay Abe . We’ve also joined creative minds with some of Mzansi’s freshest up-and-coming talent, the three winners who took top spots in our Streetwise Culture Crew design challenge - Mzwanele Fani, Morena Moletsane and the CancelWear duo Karabo Phakathi and Senzo Nkabinde.

The best part? All proceeds from our sales will be donated towards the KFC Add Hope initiative to help provide nutritious meals to underprivileged children in South Africa. So now you can look good this Summer and DO good at the same time! Yaas please!

Our Feel-Good makers in Kentucky Town will also be serving up tons of celebration feels for fans as we celebrate 50 years of "It's finger lickin' good" together. Pop in and personalise your own 'Colonel Yourself' Tees, create awesome content in our giant KFC Bucket and even blend your own 11 Herbs & Spices secret family recipe.

Introducing our Birthday Anthem collaboration ‘Masonwabe’ produced by Zakes Bantwini and featuring Mafikizolo in collaboration with our KFC SA team

What’s a Birthday celebration without a song?

Celebrating 50 years of ‘It’s Finger Lickin’ Good’ gives us at KFC the special opportunity to thank those who have made the iconic brand what it is loved for today. And no more importantly than the people who make KFC, KFC – our KFC Fam. In honour of our team, we are proud to launch our bespoke Birthday Anthem collaboration, dedicated to our 25 000 plus KFC team members across our 970 restaurants. The song ‘Masonwabe’ , meaning “Let’s be happy” was produced by chart topper Zakes Bantwini featuring leading vocals by the legendary Mafikizolo and of course, the song itself was created especially for and by the KFC team members nationwide.

Our team members helped create our Birthday Anthem by sharing their lyric inspirations and to ensure the heart and soul of the KFC team passion was represented in our celebratory music videothey also auditioned for the chance to feature alongside our song producer and artists in the video. ‘Masonwabe’ was exclusively launched to KFC teams nationwide in early December. And of course, we are sharing it with Mzansi, in the hopes to uplift spirits and remind South Africans, like the song says, “we’re still here and we know who we are, because of where we’ve been. Let’s celebrate and be happy.”

Fans can join in the #KFCTurns50 celebrations on the social media platform TikTok to celebrate to Masonwabe - the Colonel’s Way - in South Africa and Africa’s first 3D Branded Effect Hashtag challenge. Join the celebration here.
